Firefly is in Baltimore waiting for us to put her back in the water and voyage to Florida. Should be a 10 to 14 day trip depending on the weather. Several family members will join the crew along the way to assist. We hope to be moving by mid June and arrive by July 4th. More on this as the plan comes together. If you are family or friend and wish to help with the voyage please contact me.
Before she goes back in the water we have a few things that must be done. The seacocks must be rebuilt. They are functional but very stiff. A few other odds and ends but the big item is renaming her. And you would think that it’s no big deal but apparently you must appease the gods by officially removing all traces of the old name and striking it from the logs of Neptune or Posieden (depends if your Greek or Roman). You must get their attention with wine. Then you rename her with kind of a reverse process and get their attention again with more alcohol. I’m already liking this boating thing.
Once in the water, we will do some sea trials and commission a new autopilot system. I have an instructor Captain scheduled to give us pointers on close work like docking without running into stuff and seamanship. After that it’s 10 hour, 80-100 mile chunks of east coast till we are in Florida waters. Depending of several factors like how well the boat does and what hurricane season is looking like we have options like going on down to Ft. Pierce and joining Dan and the boys for more treasure hunting, or just putting Firefly back on the dry in Green Cove Springs till November (end of hurricane season). Time will tell.
